Successful Media Feature on Allergy Research
We are pleased to share that the Swiss national television SRF featured a report on allergies in its health program "Puls", highlighting also innovative developments in allergy diagnostics. The segment aired on June 23 and includes contributions from Prof. Thomas Kaufmann from our Institute of Pharmacology and Prof. Alexander Eggel from DBMR UniBern and Inselspital Bern.

Starting at minute 29:50, the reportage showcases their successful start-up company and its development of a new allergy test that is not only more precise, but also significantly less burdensome for patients compared to traditional methods.

Swiss Apoptosis and Autophagy Meeting
Prof. Thomas Kaufmann from the Institute of Pharmacology, together with Prof. Mario Tschan (IGMP, University of Bern) and Prof. Thomas Brunner (University of Konstanz, Germany), is organizing the 13th edition of the biennial Swiss Apoptosis and Autophagy Meeting (SA2M), taking place on September 4–5, 2025, in Bern.
SA2M 2025 features a fantastic lineup of speakers covering topics such as programmed cell death, autophagy, cancer, and inflammation. The program also includes poster sessions, a workshop for students and early-career scientists, and a conference dinner open to all participants. And best of all — participation is free of charge.

Announcing the Winners of the 2025 Bürgi Prize: Dr. Maria Petrosino and Dr. Karim Zuhra!
The Institute of Pharmacology of the University of Bern is pleased to announce that the jury has selected the publication “Endogenously Produced Hydrogen Cyanide Serves as a Novel Mammalian Gasotransmitter” (DOI: 10.1038/s42255-025-01225-w) by Dr. Maria Petrosino and Dr. Karim Zuhra for the 2025 Bürgi Prize. This award recognizes the best original publication addressing a research question in the field of Experimental or Clinical Pharmacology, and we are proud to honor the important contributions of Dr. Petrosino and Dr. Zuhra.
Dr. Petrosino and Dr. Zuhra will present their research at the SSPT Spring Meeting on April 24, 2025, in Bern, Switzerland, where the award will be presented by Prof. Dr. Carole Bourquin, Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and president of the jury. We congratulate Dr. Petrosino and Dr. Zuhra on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to their presentation at the upcoming meeting.
