Institute of Pharmacology

Das Institut für Pharmakologie beteiligt sich an der universitären Lehre in Pharmakologie und Immunologie für Studierende der Medizin, Zahnmedizin, Biomedizin und Biologie. In der Forschung beschäftigen sich 6 Gruppen mit pathophysiologischen Prozessen, die zu Entzündungen und Tumorerkrankungen beitragen mit dem Ziel, neue therapeutische Ansatzpunkte aufzudecken. Dabei wird eine interdisziplinärer Ansatz verfolgt, welcher In-vitro- und In-vivo-Methoden der Pharmakologie, Immunologie, Zellbiologie, molekularen Biologie und Pathologie einschliesst. Das Spektrum der Forschung reicht von Grundlagenforschung bis zu klinischen Studien, in denen die Wirksamkeit neuer Arzneimittel am Menschen getestet wird. Das Institut arbeitet eng mit Kliniken und Forschungseinrichtungen des Inselspitals zusammen. Es besteht seit 1885: eine kurze Geschichte

The Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Bern mourns the loss of Prof Dr Andrea Huwiler (1966-2023)

We have lost a passionate pharmacologist, committed university lecturer and respected scientist.

Professor Huwiler joined the Institute of Pharmacology in 2006 and served as Director since 2021, making a significant contribution to our growth and success.

Her commitment to excellence, her expertise, her dedication to teaching and promoting young scientists and her leadership qualities have left a lasting mark on our institute and our university.

The staff and students of the Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Bern will always honor her memory.

New executive committee member of EPHAR

Prof. Stephan von Gunten, Institute of Pharmacology, University of Bern, was elected as a new member of the executive committee of The Federation of European Pharmacological Societies (EPHAR). The election took place on occasion of the EPHAR council meeting in Athens, Greece, on June 27, 2022.

A novel painless and reliable allergy test

Although allergies are widespread, their diagnosis is complex and, depending on the type of allergy, the prospects of success with therapy are not always clear. Skin tests so far have been unpleasant, time-consuming and associated with a certain risk of triggering an allergic overreaction. Researchers at the University of Bern and Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, have now developed a novel test that massively simplifies the diagnosis of allergies and can reliably predict the success of a therapy.
